~ MOUNT VERNON NEWS ~ Thursday, 3 January, 1957 - NO EVIDENCE OF FOUL PLAY IN BOY'S DEATH - The bizarre death of James Lee Whittenmeyer, 17, a Gambier High Scool junior, was still tentatively listed as a suicide today by local law enforcement officials, and Sheriff Paul Cochran said that would probably be the verdict "unless there is something else." "We just can't come up with anything that points to foul play," he said today. (omitted 9 paragraphs) It was learned that Wittenmeyer, out of school on vacation, accompanied rural mail carrier "Red" Berger on his mail route Thursday, and seemed in good spirits, and that he planned to go again Friday but was not feeling well; He had also made some plans for Saturday, the day after his disappearance. Whittenmeyer's body was released to the Mill Funeral Home last night and was brought to Mount Vernon. Friends may call at the funeral home, where the funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m., the Rev. Lonzo Green officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Millersburg.
