He was a socialist who co-founded the Harvard Socialist Club and edited the Harvard Monthly. Rejecting his socialism, he became a staunch supporter of Woodrow Wilson and the Democratic Party. For 30 years he wrote the nationally syndicated column "Today and Tomorrow".
