Sophie was a beautiful calico cat. She was quite independent and could be extremely mean. She really got a bad rap in life, when she was just a kitten my grandpa had backed over her in his car. He loved animals and would never harm them in that way. He was pulling out of our driveway and Sophie didn't notice, until the wheel was on her. My grandparents rushed her to the vet on the next street and with some care and time Sophie was in tip top condition. This all happened when she was a kitten and from that time on, she never trusted a human, not unless she had too.

My grandma was that human. For years my grandma was the only one Sophie would let feed her, she wouldn't allow anyone to pet her, but after years of trying, my grandma was finally allowed to just brush her hand over the cats head and neck. No farther down than her neck. If Sophie felt anything below that, she would attack, scratching, biting, and even screeching for fear of the pain I imagine. Sophie slowly grew to love my grandma, but when Sophie had to go to the vet, grandma was ripped to shreds to get the cat into a carrier to go. Sophie moped around for weeks when my grandma was in a car accident. She refused to eat from anyone else, and the cat became very thin, but she held her ground and waited for her human to return. When my grandma got home Sophie was even allowed up into the house to see that all was ok. Sophie lived in our basement with her feline mom, Momma Cat. She never got to come up into the house except after my grandma's accident. It seemed to settle her down to know grandma was home. Even though after that grandma couldn't really feed her anymore. She suffered dizzy spells and couldn't bend over to put down the food, my grandpa slowly took over for gram, Sophie watched too. She would eat if my grandma put the food in the dish for her, and it was ok if grandpa put it on the floor. Talk about spoiled. Sophie was fine for a long time with both her humans taking care of her.

Then my grandma passed away and Sophie was lost again. She adored my grandma, even though she would only allow so much touching, and refused to be picked up, you could tell she knew grandma was going to take care of her. My grandpa then took over, Sophie wasn't happy, again years passed before she would allow grandpa to touch her. Feed her was fine, but don't lay a hand on her. Finally one day she allowed him to scratch her head. She enjoyed it and he was patient enough to do a little more with her each time. Soon she would allow scratching of her head and neck and a very light touch if you pet her back, she knew grandma was gone and I think she even understood that grandpa missed her just as much as Sophie did.

Sophie was happy, but it wouldn't last. My grandpa had fallen and broken his ankle, now another one in the hospital and this poor cat again went on strike. Not eating for weeks, mourning the loss of her human once again. When grandpa came home he couldn't go up and down the stairs, and he had made a little apartment down our basement so, he moved in with Sophie. She was happy and didn't at all mind sharing her area with him. She had forgiven him for running her over all those years ago. She was content, but as my grandpa got older his stays in the hospital were longer and more frequent.

That's where I came in, I finally, after weeks of tossing the day old cat food out, she finally ate for me. Same way as she did when grandma couldn't do it, she would watch grandpa put the food in the dish and I would put it down. She started allow me to pet her too. She had the softest fur. I think it was her outside living so much, the cold and air made her coat shiny and soft. She was getting along good and even after a while she would allow my mom to feed her. Now that was a great accomplishment on both my mom and Sophie's part. See Sophie hated humans and my mom hated cats. She would put up with Sophie and Momma cat, and any kittens that came our way, but basically my mom was not a cat person. She wouldn't hurt them, but she would prefer that they did not enter her space. Sophie felt the same about her, but there were times when my mom was the only one available to feed Sophie, so Sophie decided that mom was ok, after all she did live in our house too.

Sophie was finally, after almost 16 years of life, becoming the cat that was liked, she didn't bother anyone, she just wanted to live her life, have her dinner, a scratch now and then and that was it. But...things were changing.

I had wanted a dog so badly. I begged and pleaded and one day my mom said ok. Sophie really wasn't a pet, she was so independent, and her Momma cat had passed away, so my mom got me a beagle. Now Sophie had to learn how to deal with a hyper puppy. The Sophie of years ago would have problaby scratched the dog's eyes out and that would be it, or she would have left home permanently. But, surprisingly, she enjoyed meeting her canine friend PK. She especially liked the fact that she could come and go, and the dog was on a run....and Sophie tested it out every chance she got. Sophie actually got pleasure from teasing this young puppy. She would go out into the yard, and the dog wasn't able to reach the flap enterance to the house, so Sophie learned she was safe coming and going. Then Sophie would go and stand just beyond the dog's leash reach. She took great pleasure in teasing her new friend PK. She would watch him run and choke himself trying to get at her. She sat there with a look of satisfaction. She may have had to share her home with the dog, and part of her yard, but she was free to come and go, and the dog was chained up. Score one for Sophie. She was happy again.

We often wondered about Sophie and PK they seemed as if they hated one another. Give either one of them the chance and the other's life could be ended. But one Sunday afternoon, it was a nice day and we were all in the yard. My neighbor was raising pigeons of all things. Sophie may have had to put up with the dog, but the pigeons had better stay out of her yard and on this day one came over to visit. Now you have a cat that was already mad she had to share her yard, and to have a pigeon wanting to join in too, was just too much. Sophie took off after this bird, and of course PK being a beagle he was a bird dog, Sophie chased the pigeon into PK's territory and PK chased the bird as far as he could. Then Sophie took over again. My poor neighbor jumped the fence to save the poor pigeon, but from that day on. PK and Sophie seemed to understand one another. They would even get close enough to sniff each other. They earned a respect for each other on that day. There were many summer afternoons that my grandpa would sit in the yard and PK would be stretched out on his one side, and Sophie on the other. All enjoying the sunshine.

When PK died, Sophie actually missed him. She looked all over for her friend and I think missed him until the day she herself passed on.

Sophie passed away and was the last pet my grandpa buried, she's buried between her mom Momma Cat and PK. She lived a long life, many of it painful, but after years of pain and mistrust, she allowed herself in her final years to be loved. I'm glad she was part of my life. Rest well my friend.
