Harley Jackson Hughes was the son of Chesley and Margaret (Hendrick) Hughes, who are buried in Hughes Cemetery in Calhoun County, Alabama. He was a farmer and a Freemason. He first married Martha Ann Hagan on May 10, 1842 in Coosa County, Alabama, daughter of Edward Hagan and Hearty Porch. She was born May, 1826, probably in Calhoun County, Alabama, and died there circa 1865. He then married Mary Ann "Mollie" Windham circa 1870 in Calhoun County, Alabama.
