Actor. He is best remembered for his role as 'Spock's' father, 'Sarek', in the "Star Trek" television and movie series. In addition, he also played each of the three major aliens in the original "Star Trek" series "Alpha Quadrant" universe: a Vulcan, a Romulan, and a Klingon. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he began his acting career in a number of small parts and bit roles, including his start in the television soap operas "Search for Tomorrow" in 1951, and "Another World" (1964). He would act in "Here Come the Brides" (1968 television series), in the movie, "Annie Hall" (1977), in the role of Ape General 'Urko' in three of the "Planet of the Apes" television series, in several television episodes of "Hawaii 5-0," and "Mission Impossible." Lenard made his acting fame as the Vulcan father of 'Spock', the half-Vulcan, half-Earthling science officer on the United Federation of Planets Starship, Enterprise (NCC-1701). In one memorable episode, 'Sarek' was asked why he married an earthling, to which he replied with perfect Vulcan logic, "It seemed the logical thing to do." He not only played a Vulcan on the "Star Trek" original series, but also was the first Romulan seen on the series, playing the Romulan commander in the episode "Balance of Terror"(1966). He also played a Klingon captain in the first Star Trek movie. His last movie role was as 'Ambassador Sarek' in "Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country" (1991), although he continued to play small bit roles on television. He was married to the former Ann Amouri from 1960 until his death, and they had two daughters. Lenard was diagnosed with cancer (multiple myeloma) about a year before his death, but attended all but the last Star Trek convention, when cancer forced him to cancel his scheduled appearance in 1996. Shortly after an operation for cancer in 1996 in New York City, he developed pneumonia, and died on the day that the movie, "Star Trek 8", opened at theaters.
