SSGT Douglas B. Thate, USA (Ret.), age 56, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1991, passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2008 in Kuwait while working for ITT as a trucking contractor.

He was retired from the United States Army. Douglas Brian Thate was born on May 22, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri to Elmer and Loraine Thate.

He graduated in 1970 from Southwest High School in Kansas City and then attended 2 years at Longview Community College. He later joined the Army and served his country honorably for over 20 years in the United States Army Military Police.

Staff Sergeant Thate married Aleyda Perez on August 3, 1994 in Colorado Springs. Aleyda survives and lives in Colorado Springs. He is also survived by his parents of Kansas City, Missouri; 3 daughters: Christina Thate of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Cynthia Thate of Loveland, Colorado; Diana Thate of Colorado Springs; his brother: Jeff Thate of Plano, Texas; and his 2 sisters: Sharon McCray of Parkville, Missouri; and Pene Havens of Overland Park, Kansas.

Also surviving are his 3 stepchildren: Lily Cook, Laura Baezdiaz and Edwin Carracedo; all of Colorado Springs. Douglas had 7 grandchildren and 7 nieces and nephews.

Mr. Thate enjoyed reading and his classic motorcycle. He was a life-long Lutheran and attended Holy Cross Lutheran Church. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and many dear friends.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral Services with Army Honors will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at the Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel of Roses. Cremation is planned.

A reception will be held immediately following the funeral services at the Olympian Plaza Reception and Event Center, 975 S. Union Boulevard, Colorado Springs. Memorial Services will then be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 7500 Oak Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64114. Interment will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City.

Memorials may be made in his memory to Calvary Lutheran Church.
