Iowa Governor. For more career opportunities, he moved the Iowa, in 1839 and engaged in the stagecoach business. There he was one term as Sheriff of Jackson County and member of the Iowa Territorial House of Representatives, (1842-46). In 1846, he was elected as a Democrat the first Governor of Iowa, serving until 1850. While he was in office, the formation of the state government was initiated, a state school system was organized and the Missouri-Iowa boundary dispute was resolved. After his term as Governor, he returned to his previous businesses and later was one of the founders of the town Florence, Nebraska. He died at age at 75 while on a visit to his son John's residence.
