In the 1911 census, the Kavanagh family were living at Back Street, Bray.

William, aged 48, a General Labourer, married, born in Co. Wicklow.
Anne, his wife, aged 50, a Cook - domestic, married, born in Co. Wexford.
They had been married 27 years and had 14 children, 10 of whom were alive.

Elizabeth Kavanagh, daughter, aged 20, a General Servant,
Martin Carroll, nephew, aged 7,

All of the Kavanagh children were noted as having been born in Co. Wicklow.

It would appear that Mrs. Anne Kavanagh had been previously married to a Mr. Ashford, and that the two Ashfords noted in the 1901 census, were her children, step-children of William.
This might be part of the explanation as to why he served in WW1 under the name P. Ashford.
