Aged 22.
Son of Michael MacClancy, MRCVS, and Nancy MacClancy, of Howth Road, Raheny, Dublin.

He appears to have gone to Northern Ireland at the outbreak of World War 2, and enlisted in the RAF at Prestwick, Scotland, where he qualified for his pilot's licence in a period of 10 weeks.

The London Gazette, 2 July 1940.
Acting Pilot Officers on probation, to be graded Pilot Officers on probation, appointed on 1st May 1940, but effective from 24th March 1940,
Michael Robert MacClancy [42620]

Following the fall of France in 1940, 226 Squadron was re-assigned to RAF Sydenham, in Belfast.
While there, he met and married his wife Beatrice Josephine Campbell. They were said to have been married in Belfast in 1939, but it is more likely that this occurred in 1940.
The squadron was subsequently moved to Wattisham and Swanton-Morley in East Anglia.

Squadron Leader MacClancy died when his aircraft crashed during a landing approach to RAF Hemswell, returning from a bombing mission to Germany, during which it was hit. All six of the crew died when the plane crashed during the attempted landing.
His body was returned to Ireland for burial.

Their aircraft was destroyed when it crashed after the pilot pulled it into a steep turn in low-level flight, causing a high-speed stall. This developed into a flick-roll at low altitude, leaving the pilot no room to recover. The aircraft completed a full roll and crashed right way up. Pilot S/Ldr MR MacClancy (Irish), P/O T E Davies, F/Sgt R J Holloway and LAC L Hale all died in this incident.
