Acting Assistant Surgeon, 7th US Cavalry.
The son of Henry Norton Porter and Helen Polson Porter, he graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1872. He was 5 feet, 7 1/2 inches tall, and had blue eyes, light hair, and fair complexion. He entered into a contract with the Army on 26 June 1872, for duty at Camp Hualpai (40 miles east of Prescott, Arizona) with the 5th Cavalry. General George Crook cited him for conspicuous gallantry against the Tonto Apaches in Feb 1873. Entered into contract with the Army on 16 Oct 1873, at Camp Hancock, Dakota Territory, until 1 Dec 1874, when he entered into a joint private practice in Bismarck, ND. He entered a 3 month contract for service with the 7th Cavalry in the 1876 Sioux expedition, and during the Battle of the Little Big Horn, he served with Reno's Battalion in the valley and hilltop fights, surviving the battle. He married Charlotte Viets in Sept 1877 in Oberlin, Ohio. Elected county physician 1878-1892 for Burleigh County, ND. Continued in private practice in Bismarck, ND until his death. Travelled extensively in later years: 1883 to Europe, 1891 to South America and Cuba, and 1892 to Mexico City. Died in the Hotel Metropole, Agra, India, while on a trip around the world. Buried in Cantonment Cemetery, Agra, India. A memorial monument is beside his wife's grave in Oberlin, Ohio.
