Staff Sgt. Jason E. Burkholder, 27, a 2000 graduate of Elida Ohio High School. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps January 2000 and completed his obligation to the Marine Corps January 2004. He enlisted into the Ohio National Guard December 2004. In April 2008, he transferred into the Illinois Army National Guard. He served his first tour of duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom September 2006 to September 2007. Deployed to Afghanistan in December 2008, serving as part of a police mentor team that was helping the Afghan authorities combat the cultivation of poppies used in the illegal drug trade and to fund al-Qaida. Jason died in Kabul, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device.
