Abandoned Infant.

This precious baby girl was found discarded near Strawberry Hill Park on Bielmeir Road in South Kitsap County, Washington, on April 4. No one stepped forward to claim the child, and her mother has yet to be identified. As sad as most of the process has been, at least one positive thing happened since the baby's death - the community's reaction to the tragedy. Several people called about the baby, wanting to do something. One person asked about adopting the child, thereby giving it both a name and a family. While adoption was not a possibility, a quilt was gratefully accepted by a group made to wrap the infant in before burial, and a funeral service was performed by a local fire district chaplain. Rill Chapel agreed to cover the extra burial costs. The sheriff's office was following up on leads, including DNA results. An autopsy revealed that the baby girl was an apparent full-term, caucasian newborn. The baby's frail, day-old body was found in a garbage bag off the 3300 block of Bielmeier Road in South Kitsap on April 5, 2006. Kitsap County Coroner Greg Sandstrom named the child, who lived for only about a day, 'Dawn' because that's the only part of life she saw. The coroner's office took blood and tissue samples in a search for her family before laying her to rest at a ceremony in 2007.
