Born in Newport, Rhode Island, he began performing in local stage productions while in high school. After making his Broadway debut in the musical "New Faces of 1936," he appeared in the George Abbott productions "Too Many Girls" (1939 to 1940) and "Pal Joey" (1941). Among his other film credits are "State of the Union" (1948), "In the Good Old Summertime" (1949), "The Last Time I Saw Paris" (1954), "The Bottom of the Bottle" (1956), "Battle Squadron" (1969) and "The Purple Rose of Cairo" (1985). His television credits include "Ben Casey," "Batman", "Quincy M.E.," "The Love Boat," and the mini-series "Rich Man, Poor Man" (1977).
