Mildred Lorraine “Millie” Backes, 79, of Minot, North Dakota passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, November 13, 2016. She blessed her family, friends, community and all who knew her with her kindness, compassion, wisdom and strength. She personified grace, dignity and a commitment to faith and family.
Millie was born on March 5, 1937 in Minot to Leonard and Edna (Price) Jensen. She was reared in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1955 and Trinity School of Nursing in 1958. She married Orlin Backes at St. Leo’s Catholic Church on October 15, 1958. After Orlin graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law, they returned to Minot where Millie raised her family and was actively engaged in the Minot community.
Millie was a wonderful wife and lifelong partner to Orlin, the beloved mother of her 4 children, Brent, Jon, Mary and Paul and the grandmother of 12 grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly. She valued education and set a foundation of values and integrity for her children and grandchildren. They could not have had a better role model to emulate. Whether playing tennis or golf with friends, snow skiing or lake time with family, Millie’s quiet competitiveness and positive attitude brightened the outlook for everyone who knew her. She will be forever missed, but never forgotten.
Millie was active in support of her faith community. She was a charter member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. She was President of the church Altar Society and volunteered for numerous church activities. Millie also supported the Minot arts community. She was influential in establishing the Taube Museum of Art, and treasured her time with friends in the Minot Art Club. She was active in the Women’s Symphony League and the Minot Friends of the Gallery.
Millie valued her Scandinavian heritage and was an ambassador for the city during her four years as Minot’s “first lady” particularly showing her Norwegian guests the “Magic of Minot”.
