Arnold Backes was born July 18, 1902 at Farming, Minnesota, the third child of John and Gertrude (Willenbring) Backes. His family moved in 1902 to the Foxholm, North Dakota area where he was raised with his five brothers and two sisters. He was confirmed at St. Henry's Catholic Church north of Foxholm, July 15, 1915. After attending the seminary he was ordained a priest May 26, 1932 at Foxholm.

His first assignment was as an assistant at St. Mary's Church in Bismarck. Then in June, 1934, he came to Powers Lake as pastor of St. James Catholic Church and also had charge of mission churches at Lostwood, McGregor and Wildrose. In 1936 he moved to Grenora and St. Boniface Catholic Church. Later he served at St. John the Baptist, Odense, and St. Philip, Hirschville. He died April 22, 1953 at St. Louis, Missouri.

When his mother died in 1937, Father Arnold said the mass for her funeral.

The Rev. Arnold Backes, former assistant pastor at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral, died Wednesday ina St. Louis, Mo., hospital after a long illness.
The Most Rev. Lambert A. Hoch, bishop of Bismarck, will celebrate a pontifical requiem high mass at 11 a.m. Monday in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit here for Father Backes. The office for the dead will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Cathedral.
The body was to arrive in Bismarck Saturday evening, at which time it will be taken to the Hall Funeral Home. It will lie in state in the Cathedral beginning at 3:30 p.m. Sunday until time of the services.
Pallbearers will be John P. Wagner, John Runge, Carl Reff, A. P. Rausch, John Hagen and A. P. Simon. Interment will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Cathedral.
A native North Dakotan, Father Backes was born at Foxholm. He was ordained into the priesthood in St. Paul in 1932, serving as assistant pastor at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral in 1932 and 1933. He had been on sick leave for the past several years.
Father Backes leaves three brothers, Leonard, Glenburn, N. D., and one in Minot and one in Harvey.
