Joseph Backes was born July 16, 1911, the 7th child of John and Gertrude (Willenbring) Backes. He grew up on the family farm near Foxholm. He married Ellen Galvin in June, 1936. They made their home in Lansford where they were engaged in farming. They moved to Minot to make their home in 1943, and from 1946 to 1956 operated the Courtesy Court Motel while Joe continued his farming interests at Lansford. Joe and Ellen had four children; Norman, Patricia and twins, Janet and Jean. They were killed as a result of a head-on car collision west of Burlington on August 26, 1959 that also seriously injured their 14 year old twin daughters.
In addition to their children, Joe is survived by two sisters; Sister Rose Gertrude (Grace) and Sister Helen (Louise); three brothers; Leonard, George and Alfonse Backes.
