Ellen Catherine Galvin was born September 1, 1915 in the Foxholm area, the daughter of Ned and Olive Galvin. She married Joseph Backes in June, 1936. They made their home in Lansford where they were engaged in farming. They came to Minot to make their home in 1943, and from 1946 to 1956 operated the Courtesy Court Motel while Joe continued his farming interests at Lansford. Joe and Ellen had four children; Norman, Patricia and twins, Janet and Jean. Joe and Ellen were killed as a result of a head-on car accident 5 miles west of Burlington on August 26, 1959 that also seriously injured their twin 14 year old daughters.
In addition to her children, Ellen is survived by her parents and three brothers, Daniel, Edmond and Sgt. Patrick Galvin.
