Crescentia M. "Grace" Backes was born February 9, 1900 at Farming, Minnesota, the second child of John and Gertrude (Willenbring) Backes. She moved with her family to the Foxholm, North Dakota area in 1902. She grew up on the family farm. She attended mass at Saint Henry's Catholic Church and was confirmed there on July 15, 1912.

She entered the congregation of the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation in 1918. She spent four years in France for novitiate training and took her vows August 13, 1922 and took the name Sister Rose Gertrude. She entered nursing in 1925 and worked at St. Margaret's hospital until her retirement in 1972. she celebrated her Golden Jubilee in August of 1972. She died in Saint Margaret's convent in Spring Valley, Illinois on August 10, 1973.

She is survived by a sister, Sister Helen Backes of the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation and three brothers, Leonard, George and Alfonse Backes.
