George was born and grew up on the family farm near Foxholm, North Dakota, the 6th child of John and Gertrude (Willenbring) Backes. He married Clara Dorothy Kirsch. They had 5 children: Joseph (died as an infant), Clinton, Clarus, Myrna and Bruce.
