CAMPBELL, BEN
Ben Campbell, senior member of the law firm of Campbell, Sewall & Myer, and Mayor of Houston, was born in Montgomery County, Alabama, July 27, 1858, son of Dr. F. Campbell and Mrs. Gabriella Campbell. Educated in the public schools of Walker County, Texas; studied law in the offices of Abercrombie & Randolph, Huntsville, Texas; admitted to the bar in 1882. County Attorney of Walker County, 1884-1886; District Attorney of the Twelfth Judicial District of Texas, 1886-1890; retired in 1890 from public office and entered into law partnership with Thomas H. Ball (now candidate for Governor) under the firm name of Campbell & Ball, in Huntsville. Dissolved partnership and came to Houston in 1893; same year became a member of the law firm of Hutcheson, Campbell & Sears (now Hutcheson, Hutcheson & Hutcheson); retired from firm with Sears, and three years ago became a member of the firm of Campbell, Sewall & Myer. In 1913 elected Mayor of Houston, receiving 5,300 of the 8,000 votes cast. Married Miss Ella Smithers of Huntsville in 1883. They have six children, four sons and two daughters.
