Dr. Ellery was a native of Baltimore, Md., and a graduate of the University of Maryland. He received his diploma in 1844 and after practicing one year, in his native city, he came to Missouri in 1845, where he immediately took rank among the foremost of his profession, and sustained until the time of his death, a distinguished reputation as a gentleman, a scholar and a physician.
Remiss almost to a fault in the care of his own personal interest and in his concern about public affairs, he devoted himself with unexampled enthusiasm to the study and practice of his profession. By the assiduity, patience and delicacy of his ministrations, he won the affectionate esteem and gratitude of thousands whose sufferings he had alleviated, or whose lives, or the lives of whose friends he had been instrumental in saving.
Nothing could exceed the delicacy and brotherly kindness with which he was accustomed to approach the bedside of the suffering. Throughout the extensive circle of his practice he was regarded by his patrons more like a dear friend or relative than a mere professional attendant; and there are hundreds of families, to whom the tidings of his death will come like the knell of a departed brother. It was, doubtless, his self-sacrificing spirit and his unparalleled devotion to the public good, which led him to those too frequent exposures, hardships and perils, that impaired his once strong constitution and induced his premature decease.
No man, within the observation of the writer, ever spent his life more emphatically in literally going about to do good. He was a most generous, kind-hearted and devoted friend, cherishing always a nice sense of honor, and regarding with abhorrence every approach to meanness and duplicity. Though often the victim of the envenomed shafts of envy, and keenly sensible to every assault upon his professional reputation or his more character, he returned not evil for evil, but with meek forbearance, he bore without resentment or retaliation, the most cruel and unjustifiable wrongs.
He has left to mourn his sad departure, a venerable mother, a devoted wife, and four helpless little ones. These……

At a meeting of the Wyaconda Lodge No. 24 of Free and Accepted Masons, held at their Lodge room in the city of LaGrange on the 24th August inst. The W.M. stated to the craft, that he had called them together to announce the painful intelligence, of the decease of their brother, Dr. Wm. E. Ellery, who had that day been called by the "Grand Master" of the Universe from "labour" below, to "refreshment" above. Whereupon, Bro.'s Talbot, Waltman and Davis, were appointed a Committee to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the Lodge upon the occasion, who submitted the following which was unanimously adopted.
"Whereas, it has pleased God in his providence to visit us with affliction, in taking from our midst that our much esteemed and loved brother Dr. Wm. E. Ellery, therefore:
Resolved, That in the death of Bro. Ellery, Masonry has lost one of her brightest lights, our Lodge room one of its most zealous and faithful labourers, the Profession to which he belonged an accomplished, useful, efficient member, and Society a bright and polished ornament. As a friend he was true, as a parent affectionate, as a husband devoted and fond, as a Master Mason generous in the extreme.
