Captain Joseph Mears.
Funeral services for Captain Joseph Mears, of 4056 Duquesne avenue, Northside, were held yesterday afternoon. He had been ill for about two weeks prior to his death. He was born in Westmoreland county 73 years ago and was a son of the late John Mears and Mrs. Martha Young Mears. Youngstown. O.. was named after the ancestors of his mother. He was a veteran of the Civil war. In 1874 he entered Northside fire department as a hoseman, in the old station at Anderson and Lacock street. Later he was promoted to captain of the Columbia company, being transferred to No. 14 and later to No. 12. He retired from active service about four years ago. Mr. Mears was a member of Post No. 128, G. A. R.. and of the Presbyterian church. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Lottie Maxwell Mears, and the following children: Prof. Walter G. Mears, Mrs. Hettie Jordan, Miss Mamie Mears, John A. Mears, Mrs. Lottie Ingram and Mrs. William M. Hobson.
