Member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Burlington, Vermont. Joined the U.S. Navy and prior to World War II, served aboard the USS tulsa (PG 22), which was part of the South China Patrol. He later transferred to the USS Rainer (AOE 7). Here he served as a Chief Carpenters Mate, 2c.

Preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Prctor.
