Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player, Broadcaster. He was a prolific member of the famed Brooklyn Dodgers' "Boys of Summer" teams of the late 1940s and 1950s. For eighteen seasons (1947 to 1964), he played at the outfielder (primarily a center-fielder) position with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. Born in Los Angeles, California, he attended Compton High School before being signed as an amateur free agent by Brooklyn in 1943. He served with the United States Navy during World War II, before marking his Major League debut with the Dodgers on April 17, 1947, and appearing in 40 games that year. A fan favorite, he established himself as one of baseball's most accomplished sluggers of his era; he produced five consecutive 40-or-better home run years (1953 with 42, 1954 with 40, 1955 with 42, 1956 league-leader with 43 and 1957 with 40), also exceeding a .300 batting average seven-times while playing in more than 100 games. He appeared in 36 total World Series games, compiling 38 hits with 11 home runs, 26 RBIs and a .286 batting average. He was part of two World Championship teams (1955 and 1959 Dodgers) and became the first player to hit four home runs in two different World Series (1952 and 1955). In 2,143 career regular season games, he amassed 2,116 hits, 407 home runs, 1,333 RBIs and a .295 lifetime batting average; he achieved All-Star status eight-times (1950 to 1956, 1963). Following his playing career Snider served as a Minor League manager, and later announced games with the San Diego Padres (1969 to 1971) and Montreal Expos (1973, 1976 to 1986). From 1974 to 1975, he served as a coach with the Expos. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980.
