Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 1, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company I on September 13, 1862. He deserted the regiment when it arrived in its post in Maryland on September 29, 1862. However, he returned to duty on March 18, 1863, taking advantage of a Presidential Proclamation granting clemency to Union Army deserters who return to their units voluntarily. He served through the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.
