James Abernathy was a co-pilot assigned to the 25th Bomb Squadron, 40th Bomb Group, 58th Bomb Wing, XX Bomber Command

On 20 August B-29 serial #42-6301 (Wayupinthere) was unreported after leaving the primary target at the Imperial Iron and Steel Works in Yawata, Japan. This was the first daylight mission against Japan since the Doolittle raid of 1942. Later on it was learned that the airplane went down at a point 170 miles south of Hsinching, China. It was initally believed that the plane ran out of gas and the men bailed out over China. Later, it was determined that the crashed 45 miles south of Kunlien, China. The pilot, Captain JAMES A SLATTERY and all crew members were killed, and were buried on the spot by the Chinese.
