Funeral services for T/Sgt. Charles Leroy Abney, Jr., 22 years old son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Abney, 1012 North Jefferson, who was killed in action over Belgium, will be held at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Klingner chapel with the Rev. Porter Bower officiating. Burial will be in Clear Creek cemetery. Sergeant Abney was killed over Belgium March 1, 1945. He was a flight engineer on a B-17 in the Eight Air Force and had been awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious achievement in missions in the air offensive against the enemy over Continental Europe. Prior to his admission to the Air Corps, in 1943, Sergeant Abney graduated from Senior High school and attended SMS. Later he resided in Riverside, Cal.; where he was assistant manager for S. H. Kress and Company. Besides his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Trogdon, 507 Hovey; two brothers, Bill and Jess Abney of the home; two sisters, Miss Marlene Abney of the home; and Mrs. Robert DeMate, Joplin; an uncle, Floyd Abney of the home and a nephew, Donald DeMate, Joplin. Pallbearers will be William Cantrell, Trellis Wicks, Bob Abernathy, Lloyd Hart, Jimmy Payne, and Edward Watkins. (Springfield Leader-Press, Springfield, MO, Thursday, June 2, 1949, p. 28, Col. 3)
