Sanford H. "Sam" Evans, MSgt, United States Marines Corps, retired, 73, of 162 Briar Ridge Drive, Waynesboro, PA, died at 9:22 A.M. Thursday, July 9, 2009 in the Waynesboro Hospital. He was born on July 23, 1935 in Winthrop, MA, son of the late Harold J. Sr. and Mildred I. (Eldredge) Evans. Mr. Evans graduated from Winthrop High School with the class of 1954. He later attended Penn State Mont Alto Campus and Shippensburg University. He served in the United States Marines Corps for 20 years, serving during the Korean Conflict and two tours in the Vietnam Conflict, retiring in 1984. He and his wife of over 46 years, Mrs. Nancy L. (Cordell) Evans, were married March 16, 1963 in Waynesboro. They moved to the present residence in 1988. Following his retirement from the military, he was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot in Department #370 in electronics. He retired in 1992. Mr. Evans was a member of Christ United Methodist Church; Waynesboro Country Club; Wm. Max McLaughlin V.F.W. Post #695; Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15; Eagle's Club Inc. and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #731, where he was past Exalted Ruler, all of Waynesboro, also a member of Glenview United Lodge #1058 Free & Accepted Masons in Glenview Illinois; Amvets Post #172 of Fairfield; Marine Corps League of Chambersburg, Marine Corps League Home Association #290 of Chambersburg, and the national AARP. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jeffrey S. (wife Deborah) Evans of Penn National, one daughter, Kelly L. (husband David) Rock of Mont Alto, four grandchildren, Megan Rock, Brad Rock, Bryce Evans, and Lauren Evans, one brother, Harold J. Evans, Jr. of Winthrop and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin D. Rock who died in 1994, a sister, Judy Millar, three brothers, Donald Evans, Richard Evans and Roy "Mike" Evans.
