The name of a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper killed in a crash Friday morning has been released by the Missouri State Troopers' Association.

Trooper James M. Bava, age 25, was killed as a result of a traffic crash in Audrain County.

Bava was appointed to the Missouri State Highway Patrol on July 1, 2013, and was a member of the Patrol's 97th recruit class.

He is the 31st member of the Patrol to lose his life in the line of duty.

In an announcement made by Colonel Bret Johnson on Friday afternoon on the association's Facebook page, Johnson stated:

"Today, as well as the days, weeks, and months ahead, please continue to remember Trooper Bava's family, friends, and the law enforcement community in your thoughts and prayers. Trooper Bava made the ultimate sacrifice in the service to the people of Missouri. Let us always remember and honor the memory of this courageous trooper."

Trooper Bava is survived by his parents, two sisters, a brother, and one half sister.

Governor Jay Nixon on Friday afternoon ordered the flags at the Missouri State Highway Patrol facilities to immediately be lowered to half-staff to honor Trooper Bava. They will remain at half-staff through the day of Bava's funeral. After the funeral date is set, Governor Nixon will order flags statewide to fly at half-staff.
