Amanda was shot and killed at the home she shared with her boyfriend. He is also a police officer and has been arrested for the murder.

Chief Lebert said his first impressions of Cates was that of a passionate police officer who enjoyed her work as a school resource officer at Normandy Middle School. She spent the summer working with teachers and pulling together projects for the children in anticipation of the new school year.

"It's unique to see an officer pour her heart and soul into her work," Lebert said. "But she genuinely cared for and loved the kids there."

AS AN AFTER NOTE: Robert Brooks was found guilty of second degree murder.
