Kevin Earl Carper of Spartanburg, SC, was the son of Donald Eugene Carper, and Pax Pauline Parker Carper. A graduate of the South Carolina Police Academy, he was a Deputy III with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department and was a member of the Southern States Police Benevolent Association, Inc., and St. James United Methodist Church where he was a member-at-large of the Church Council. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, and a loving Dad. Kevin attended Pendleton Heights High School when he lived in Indiana. Then he and his mother moved to Mississippi, and he graduated from high school there and attended a junior college in Pensacola, Fla. He enjoyed basketball and had been on the Pendleton High School team. He also liked fishing and was known for his sense of humor.

Kevin was killed in the line of duty by a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputy Carper initiated a traffic stop which became a foot pursuit and then a struggle. His assailant produced a handgun and fired twice. One round was stopped by the deputy's vest. The other fatally wounded Deputy Carper. He had been a Spartanburg deputy for 12 years. He was 39.
