DARRELL MONTY CARMIKLE, 45, of Heber Springs died November 16, 2008 in a work-related accident. With his untimely death, Arkansas loses one of its most avid outdoorsmen.
Monty, a 23-year veteran of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, served as a Sergeant working out of the Cleburne County area. Some would call Monty a "Man's Man", others knew him as "a Big Man with an even Bigger Heart"! Former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee said "Monty Carmikle was one of Arkansas' most dedicated public servants who loved his job and performed it with absolute integrity."
Born Aug. 16, 1963, in Memphis and growing up in Forrest City, Monty learned early about good citizenship as well as public service from his father's leadership as Chief of Police in that eastern Arkansas city. In his senior year of high school, Monty made the All-State football team. After attending East Arkansas Community College, he went through the Arkansas Game and Fish Academy, graduating in 1986. After two years working the Johnson County area, Monty was transferred to Heber Springs.
In 1991, Monty was named Wildlife Officer of the Year for the Southeast Region. In 1995, he created the Game and Fish Search and Rescue Dive Team, where he remained involved for the next decade. Monty participated in Arkansas' first ever "Down the River" trip to help bring awareness throughout the state to the great wonders of Arkansas' outdoors, ultimately helping to pass Constitutional Amendment 65. He was also an Academy Instructor for new cadets and taught Hunter Safety in Cleburne County. He was an active member of the Wildlife Officers Association.
Monty was a Charter Member of Heber Springs Baptist Church where he served in various leadership capacities, including Commander of the AWANA youth program. He had an extreme love for "local" sports programs, especially those that involved the participation of his son Caleb. Monty was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Panther 100 Club of Heber Springs High School.
As an avid hunter and fisherman, Monty was an honorary member of the Red Sky Hunt Club in Lonoke County. His outdoor skills and leadership qualities enriched the lives of his fellow hunters, especially during Arkansas' duck season.
Monty is survived by his wife, Mary Giles Carmikle, his son, Caleb Hunter Carmikle, his mother, Marilyn Finch Carmikle, his sister, LuLyne Taylor, and his uncle, Jimmy Finch. He was preceded in death by his father, James Carmikle, his grandparents, Melvin and Lilly Carmikle, Monta and Lillian Finch, and his wife's grandparents, Reverend and Mrs. Glen Giles. He is also survived by his wife's parents, Carl and Peaches Giles, her grandparents, Joe and Bernice Tracer, and her brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Karen Giles and their children.
