James was the son of David Thibodeau and Elizabeth Dumont. David Thibodeau was born in 1811 in Acadia and died in 1885 in Madawaska, Maine. David's wife, Elizabeth Dumont, also known as Elizabeth Desmond, died at about age 40 from childbirth.

It appears that his gravestone was made in 1928 when his son David's military gravestone was made. No evidence of military service. He was too young to serve in th Civil War and a bit too old for the Spanish American War. Way too old for World War I.
