Winston L. Adsit, age 93, of Horseheads, formerly of Corning and Keuka Lake, died Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at Bethany Manor in Horseheads.

Winston was born in Corning on Aug 17, 1915, to Oscar and Elvira (Gould) Adsit.

A graduate of Northside High School, he served his country in the US Army from 1941-45, during WWII, and received a Bronze Star and the French Croix de Guerre. Winston owned and operated Adsit Hardware on Bridge St in Corning for over 30 years, and had owned Culligan Water Conditioning, and he worked as Civil Defense Director in Steuben Co. He had been a life member of the Elks, a member of Corning's Kiwanis Club, Hammondsport's American Legion, Bath Country Club, Northside Business Bureau, the City of Corning Bowling Assoc, and he is in the Corning Sports Hall of Fame for bowling. Winston had been a Trustee and Deacon at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Corning.

He was preceded in death by his wife Annette of 62 years and by two sisters, Leota Bills and Rhea Grammenstetter, and by a brother, Roland.

He is survived by his two daughters, Susan (Charles) Elliott of Horseheads, NY, Deborah Perry of Owego, NY; grandchildren, Julie (Anthony) Giustino of MA, Jill (Kevin) Long of MA, Jennifer (Michael) Warrick of CO, Thomas Elliott of FL, Kevin and Daniel Elliott of Horseheads; and by seven great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Tue, Jan 6 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St in Corning where funeral services will be on Wed, Jan 7 at 11 AM. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Hammondsport. The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Bethany Manor for their excellent care, especially his niece, Laura Williamson.
