ARKPORT - Lowell D. Briggs, 65, of Arkport passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003 at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.

Lowell was born Dec. 27, 1937 in the Town of Dansville (Steuben County), a son of Derwin and Ethel (Keller) Briggs.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1955 to 1959. His active service was in Formosa, Japan and Korea.

Lowell moved from South Dansville to Pennsylvania in 1961, then to Lakewood, Ohio in 1963, then to West Coxsackie, N.Y. in 1969 and back to South Dansville in 1999. He was an employee of the Erie Lackawanna/Conrail railroads, where he worked in labor relations. He retired in 1999.

Lowell was an active, longstanding member of the South Dansville Volunteer Fire Depart-ment. He was an active volunteer of the Lakewood YMCA. He enjoyed being outdoors, tending to his plants, remodeling his home, where he was very adept with woodworking. He loved to hunt.

Lowell is survived by his son, Lowell D. and Kristi Briggs of Texas and their daughters Beverly D. Briggs of Georgia and Cynthia Anne Leah Briggs of Tennessee; his son Jonathan E. and Diane T. Briggs of West Sparta, and their daughters Jessica L. and Ashley M. Briggs, both of West Sparta; his sisters and brothers, Joyce Briggs, Doug (Sally) Briggs, James (Chris) Briggs, Thomas (DeeDee) Briggs, Steven (Liz) Briggs, Roger Briggs, and Ruth (Stephen) Born; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends called 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003 at the Chamberlin-Baird Funeral Home, 73 Main St, Dansville, where funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday with the Rev. Alan Fox officiating. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Rogersville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cancer Treatment Center, 21 Orchard St., Hornell, NY 14843, or to the South Dansville Volunteer Fire Dept., c/o Jim Briggs, Day Rd., Arkport, NY 14807 in memory of Lowell D. Briggs. (GCE, September 4, 2003, p4)
