Martin Adams was the son of John Adams and Margaret Arnold Adams. He was the grandson of Abednego Adams and Frances "Fanny" Rippy Adams. Martin died of disease October 25, 1862 at Winchester, Virginia.

Martin married Rhoda M. Wylie in 1848 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Rhoda was the daughter of Thomas Wylie and Mary Gilmore Wiley. Martin and Rhoda had five children:

Company H "Rough & Readys", 34th North Carolina Infantry, Pender's Brigade, A.P. Hill's Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Cleveland County NC; a 6'1" 37 year-old Farmer with dark complexion, black eyes.
Enlisted on 10/1/1861 at Shelby, Cleveland County, NC., he was mustered into Company H, 34th NC Infantry as a Private at Camp Fisher on 10/25/1861.
Present on Jan & Feb 1862 Roll.
AWOL 2/21-4/29/1862; docked pay.
Died of disease. His widow, Rody, filed a Settlement Claim on 5/23/1863; found due $142.16.

The 34th Infantry Regiment was assembled at High Point, North Carolina, in October, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Ashe, Rutherford, Rowan, Lincoln, Cleveland, Mecklenburg, and Montgomery.

The older grave stone is in Stonewall Confederate Cemetery, Winchester, Winchester City, Virginia. The newer stone is a memorial stone located in Grover Cemetery, Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina. That stone was placed in the Dave Adams, Sr. family plot in the 1980's
