Musician. A drummer and vocalist, he was a founding member of the music group The Mothers Of Invention which featured Frank Zappa. Born James Inkanish, Jr. in El Paso, Texas, he learned to play a variety of instruments including the piano before settling on the drums. After serving in the United States Air Force, he formed the group The Soul Giants. They would eventually evolve into The Mothers Of Invention after Zappa became a member in 1964. Among their notable albums are "Freak Out!" (1966), "Absolutely Free" (1967), "We're Only In It For The Money" (1968), "Uncle Meat" (1969) and "200 Motels" (1971). During the 1970s, Black formed his own group Geronimo Black. In the 1990s, he joined the British group The Muffin Men. He died from cancer.
