His "Nude Descending A Staircase, No. 2" in 1912 was not a painting of a nude human but an abstract painting of cubes walking down an imaginary staircase. There were six children in the Duchamp family with him and three other siblings becoming successful modern artists: His brothers, Jacque Villon, a painter; and Raymond Duchamp-Villon, the sculpture; and his sister, Susan Duchamp, was a French Dadaist painter. With his sister being active in the Dadaists art period, he supported the 1930s Surrealist, which evolved from Dadaism. Featured in the May of 1999 issue of "ART News," he was one of the top 25 artists in the western world and the man who "showed the way to life after the avant-garde, the one who offered us a graceful exit from modernism."
