Chess Player. Using a philosophical approach to the game, he is generally regarded as one of the most dominant chess players of all time. He played in thousands of matches and for 27 years (1894–1921), he was World Chess Champion. He made many contributions to the development of the game, wrote five chess books and published chess magazines. He also was an accomplished bridge card player. He died of a kidney infection at age 72.
