He lived in Redwood Valley, California 95470 before moving to Jonestown, Guyana where he lived in Cottage 10. He entered Guyana on March 15, 1978. His mother, Cheryl Wilson Gosney, was brain-damaged at his birth and died in 1980. His father was Vernon Dean Gosney who was one of the defectors that day. He believed that his biracial son would be safe and cared for in Jonestown and had planned to return for him. He was later shot at the Port Kaituma airstrip but survived only to learn about his son's fate as well as hundreds of children, men and women, who were forced to drink the poisoned drink. He had planned to return for Mark later but it was too late. His father, Vernon, was devastated by the loss of his son when he learned the news. Vern led a self-destructive lifestyle before moving to Hawaii. He moved to Maui, Hawaii and became a police officer. He still talks about Jonestown, living with AIDs, and his losses such as his son and partners. He even testified on the behalf of Larry Layton Jr. for his parole hearing. Larry had shot Vern and Monica on the plane on November 18, 1978.
