In December 1863, Nathan E. Hayes joined Company H, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was 44 years old at the time. Nathan was relatively fit upon enlistment but his age made the military an arduous affair. In the span of just a few months, Nathan contracted rheumatism, scurvy, and chronic diarrhea. He also injured his back after slipping on a log.
Between the illnesses and the back injury, Nathan was granted a medical discharge and received a pension. Nathan became an active member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) following the war. Despite the hardships he endured during his service in the Union Army, Nathan lived to be 90 years old.
