Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Izano, Marco Cé came from a modest family of farmers. Entering the seminary of Crema, he was sent to Rome in order to pursue his studies, first at the Seminario Lombardo and successively at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Ordained priest there in March 1948, he returned to Crema, where he was soon assigned as vice-rector of the diocesan seminary and professor of Sacred Scriptures. Appointed rector of the same seminary in 1957, he continued with his lectures up till 1970, when his episcopal nomination as auxiliary for the metropolitan see of Bologna arrived. Receiving his episcopal consecration on May 17 that year in Crema, with the titular see of Vulturia, Cé was named general ecclesiastical assistant of the Italian Catholic Action on May 21, 1976. Promoted to the patriarchal see of Venice on December 7, 1978, he took possession of the see on the following January 1, 1979, making his solemn entrance a week later. Pope John Paul II created him cardinal priest in his first consistory of June 30, 1979, with the title of San Marco. A gifted preacher, known for his many retreats and spiritual exercises which he delivered across the years, in March 2006 he preached the spiritual exercises for Pope Benedict XVI and the Roman Curia at the Redemptoris Mater of the Vatican City. Retiring from office on January 5, 2002, the Cardinal spent his remaining years in Venice, passing away at the Ss. Giovanni e Paolo hospital, where he had been recovering since March 19, following the fracture of his left femur after a fall in his residence, having received upon his request, the last rites from his successor, Patriarch Francesco Moraglia.
