Author. He is best-remembered, as an American author, for creating the hard-boiled detective Mike Hammer, who appeared in a series of violent mystery novels beginning with "I, the Jury" in 1947. There have been several films adapted from his books, including a "Mike Hammer" television series in the 1980s, starring Stacy Keach. He himself played the character in the film "The Girl Hunters" in 1963. He wrote for magazines and comic books prior to writing novels, which made him famous.
