When he tried to enlist in the military, he was rejected several times because of poor eyesight. In 1917 he was able to sign up with the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps. He trained at MIT's School of Military Aeronautics & was shipped to England in August of 1917.
He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant & was in charge of taking fresh planes across the English Channel to France.
He died in a plane crash while practicing maneuvers.
He was a very gifted equestrian, excelling at steeplechase.
