Spiritual and civic leader. Grand Rabbi Jacob Israel Korff was born in present day Ukraine as a member of an unbroken dynasty of rabbis dating back eight centuries. He was a direct descendant of Ba'al Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidic Judaism. He married Gittel Goldman and settled in Zvil. Leaving his family behind, he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts where he became the leader of the local Hasidic community. In 1919 his wife was murdered in the violent anti-Jewish pogroms and he subsequently married her sister Etta and relocated his family to Boston.
Grand Rabbi Korff was the founder of the Union of Chassidic Rabbis and he was instrumental in the rescue of many Jews from the Russian pogroms and the Nazi holocaust. His home on Woodrow Avenue in Dorchester was visited continuously by those seeking advice and spiritual leadership.
He was the father of three rabbis including the controversial Rabbi Baruch Korff who became known as "Nixon's Rabbi". He is the grandfather of Grand Rabbi Yitzhak Aharon Korff of Boston and Jerusalem.
Grand Rabbi Korff's funeral attracted an estimated 5000 mourners including Boston mayor John Hynes and Massachusetts governor Paul Dever.
