Gwendalyn Joyce Nichols
Coons
1937-2009

A celebration of life is set for 3 p.m. Friday, July 17 at Inyo
Council for the Arts for longtime resident Gwendalyn Joyce Nichols
Coons. Burial service will be private.

Born Jan. 9,1937 in Hemet, Gwendalyn died peacefully in her home on
July 5, 2009. She was 72.

Gwendalyn first moved to Bishop at age 11 when her father, Rolland
"Nick" Nichols, of the California Highway Patrol transferred to the area.
Gwendalyn graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1954,then
studied at the University of Redlands. She then began a teaching career at
Bishop High School where she met fellow teacher Wallace Condon.
The two married in 1954 and moved to Stockton to begin their family.

Gwendalyn returned to Bishop in 1983 to be closer to her parents.
She tutored at he Indian Education Center, Owens Valley Conservation
Camp and for private students. Gwendalyn was inspired by the develop-
ment of a local campus for Cerro Coso Community College, which she
shared with her second husband, Clyde Coons. She helped arrange a
temporary classroom center on Birch and Grandview streets so that curses
could continue until the present campus was built. She thoroughly enjoyed
working with the students and staff at the college as an administrative co-
ordinator until her retirement in 1996.

Gwendalyn's other love was art. She had a fondness for portrait painting
and collage work. As a member of the Stockton Art League for many years,
then as a member of the Inyo Council for the Arts, Gwendalyn always
demonstrated her interest in local artists and events.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nel and Bill Hecht of
Bishop; son and daughter-in-law Hal and Mary Condon of Stockton;
grandchildren, Joy and Jonathon Hecht, and Andrew and Anthony Condon;
sisters and brothers-in-law, Wenda and Howard Holland of Bishop,
Lynda and Lloyd Wilson of Mammoth Lakes; nieces and nephews,
Mike and Annette Holland, Dan and Donna Holland, Donna Bird and
Shelly Wilson, all of Bishop, and Steve and Amy Wilson of Crowley Lake.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gwendalyn's memory to the Inyo Council for the Arts.
