Joseph W. Burke, 73, of 5901 N. Talman, Chicago, formerly of Rock Island, died yesterday afternoon in Grant Hospital, Chicago, after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Hilary's Roman Catholic Church in Chicago.

Visitation will be at the Drake Funeral Home on Western Avenue in Chicago tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mr. Burke was born in Clinton, Iowa, Aug. 18, 1900, the son of William J. and Ann Ennis Burke of Clinton. He married Clara VanDale of Moline in March 1923 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Moline.

He was a member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 10 Jul 1925 - 1 Jan 1952, and was named chief April 8, 1949. He retired from the department Jan. 1, 1952, to enter private industry.

Survivors include the widow; a son, Patrick, of Chicago; two grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Madeline Gerhart, of Sarasota, Fla. and Mrs. Marguerite Wiegmann, of Rock Island.
