Fred B. Gibson, 59, retired Rock Island fire department captain who twice distinguished himself as a hero during, a 25-year period, died at his home at 8 p. m., Thursday, following an extended illness and battle with cancer. Capt. Gibson was retired on July 29, 1949, with Harold Phillips, who died before his pension could be placed into effect. The body has been taken to the Hodgson funeral home. Firemen will attend his funeral in a body.

Capt. Gibson, who resided at 2908 Twenty second avenue, began his service Nov. 2, 1923.

He rescued Carol Finkelstein from a smoke-filled room in the early 30s and saved four-year-old Joyce Monroe from injury by fire Jan. 8, 1931. Member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 2 Nov 1923 - 28 Jul 1949

He was appointed captain of the No. 4 station on Nov. 1, 1939, where he remained until his retirement. As an active member of the Rock Island Lions club for a number of years, Capt. Gibson served as chairman for the club's blind aid seal sales.

Gibson was hospitalized six days for treatment for an injured spine following a fall from a ladder while fighting a fire on March 2, 1933.

At the Sash and Door Works fire, Jan. 23, 1943, he was treated for body and head injuries. He was struck in the stomach with a charged line and later incurred a blow on the head from another line.

Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife, and a brother, W. W. Gibson of Pascagoula, Miss. The funeral will be Monday at 2 p. m. at Hodgson's mortuary with Rev. Ernest J. Campbell of First Methodist church, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Saturday.
