Elmer A. Butler, 58, of 2312 24 1/2 Street, Rock Island, died at 5:50 Saturday night at Lutheran Hospital following an extended illness. He was a 20 year veteran of the Rock Island Fire Department, retiring in July 1970.

Funeral services will be at 11 tomorrow morning at the Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. The Rev. Kenneth D. McArthur, pastor of First United Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, will officiate, and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight where masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 tonight by Rock Island Lodge No. 658, AF & AM.

Mr. Butler was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Rock Island, the son of Stephen D. and Margueretta Kaskadden Butler. He received his education in Rock Island and was a life time resident.

He married Jean M. Hauerwas Sept. 27, 1941, in Rock Island.

Mr. Butler was a member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 15 Nov 1949 - 26 Jul 1970 and had been a member of the Third Platoon for nearly his entire career, serving in every fire station in the city. He began his career by fighting a major blaze which demolished the former Central Junior High School. He was appointed as a lieutenant July 7, 1965, and had attended many fire department schools and training courses in various aspects of fire techniques.

Following his retirement from the fire department he was employed by Brookfield Pest Control, Davenport, and since last August worked as a security officer for the Rock Island Board of Education.

He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, Rock Island Lodge No. 658, AF & AM, Rock Island Commandery No. 18, Knights Templar, and the Royal Arch Masons. He also was a member of VFW Post No. 2153, Moline, and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy.

Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Daniel Lee Gansz, Grovetown, Ga; a brother, Dale S., Rock Island, and his mother, Mrs. Marguertta Ague, Rock Island. He was preceded in death by his father and a twin sister.
