In May 1949, Thomas married Edith Rustay, and the couple raised two children: Cynthia and Thomas. He served as a military guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. He was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation in the machine shop for 33 years before retiring in 1981. He traveled around the world three times and hiked the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia several times. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Minsi Trail Council, Allen O'Delke American Legion Post 16 in Slatington, Appalachian Trail Council, and he was on the board of directors for Hawk Mountain. He was a volunteer at the Parkland Library, and received the volunteer of the year award.
